The year 2018 has witnessed a bunch of significant rollout events, scandals and even the ending of gadgets and technologies from renowned tech companies like Facebook, Google, Nintendo, and Microsoft. How many gadgets and technologies in this list once were an indispensable part of your life? Here is the list!

  1. Yahoo Messenger

Yahoo Messenger was too familiar with all kinds of users under various ages. Its official shutdown was on July 17th, 2018. The messenger brought the first web experience to the young in the 90s. However, with the rapid development of countless rivals such as Facebook, Instagram Direct, Snapchat, and Whatsapp, Yahoo Messenger couldn’t survive anymore.

  1. Google URL shortener

The service has operated as a fun tool for nine years, from 2009 to 2018. After Google killed it, the tech company also recommend users to use Firebase Dynamic Links (FDL) or some other services with the same functions like Ow.ly or Bitly.

First launched in 2016, it is a messaging app for small groups in forums. Google developed this app to work as a tool similar to Slack.

Another app from Google will stop operating in a few next months is Google Inbox. The inbox app was released in 2014 and will close by March 2019. The reason behind this shutdown has not been revealed.

Designed for the Android platform, the Hello app was rolled out in 2015. After the almost 3-year operation, it was officially shut down on July 31. The app enabled users to connect their information on Facebook to contact data on smartphones.

M is the virtual assistant developed by Facebook which has operated in about two and a half years. It is developed to send stickers, set up events, support online payments, etc. The number of its users in California reached only 2000.

The list of Google’s gadgets and technologies that have died in 2018 included Blob emojis. Google unveiled the emojis’ ending on the company’s official Blogspot on the World Emoji Day. However, they are back as sticker packs on Gboard and Android messages.

As a result of a security breach with 5,00,000 victims this year, Google decided to kill Google Plus, a social media platform. After that, the next data leak came out, leading that Google + must be shut down earlier than the expected time. Users have a few months to go on this platform before saying goodbye to it.

In 2014, Mark Zuckerberg’s company purchased Moves fitness tracker that offered the feature recording daily activities of users like running, cycling, and walking. The app was shut down on July 31st, 2018.

Released in March 2016, the social networking mobile app helped users to chat with their friends on the two platforms including Android and iOS via answers and shares on Twitter and Facebook. Nintendo plans to shut down its servers in May 2019 and therefore, Miitomo will be killed.

Also present in the list of these gadgets and technologies, Facebook’s third app that will be no longer active after 2018 is an anonymous teen app called tbh. The app was bought to aim at the US’s high school students.

The program was launched last year, and after only one year, Microsoft decided to shut down it in August 2018.

Google developed Tango to support developers in the design of AR-based apps running on the Android platform. Google Tango was killed on March 2018.

The first time Android users heard of the feature was three years ago. It helps users to discover what’s going on around them. The feature has been shut down in the year 2018.

On December 2017, Google made an announcement on its shutdown of the Chrome web store’s app section which is available on the three versions of Chrome including Mac, Linux, and Windows. The functionality was shut down at the beginning of 2018.
