If you think there are fully waterproof earbuds, you should recalibrate your expectations. However, we can have something really close.
The AirPods have no IP rating, but surprisingly, it beats both the Beats Powerbeats Pro and Samsung Galaxy Buds when it comes to water resistance.
Here the ratings of the three models:
Samsung Galaxy Buds: IPX2
Beats Powerbeats Pro: IPX4
AirPods: no rating.
If you do not understand what the numbers mean, here is a brief explanation. IPX2 means the earbuds can remain unharmed if drops of water fall on them. So in reality, it translates to resistant against light rain and sweat.
IPX4 certified that the earbuds could survive in situations like when they have to endure splashes of a garden water sprinkler.
CNET put the three models through a sweat test, which should be nothing to Powerbeats Pro and Galaxy Buds, but no one can be sure what AirPods will end up.
When the testers tool them to the gym, all three of them survive without any noticeable damage.
If yours are in the same situation, what you need to do is to take them out and dry them quickly.
The next test was far from what the ratings said the earbuds could endure:
The AirPods, as well as two other contestants, showed no damage in the sound quality.
The last test was to put them through a full circle of a washing machine.
48 hours after being dried, Powerbeats Pro recovered well, Samsung Galaxy Buds had one side damaged, and AirPods came out with most of its power intact.
Manufactures do not promise waterproof earbuds, so there is no complaint here about how the earbuds withstand the tests. However, owners of these models can have a clear idea of how they can come out of a rain shower.
