WHO (short for World Health Organization) opened a TikTok account last week to further fight misinformation on the Coronavirus. As the official heath agency of the UN (United Nations), WHO is now the leading force in containing COVID-19 outbreak.
The agency’s first video is perhaps what we need most right now – measures people can take to protect themselves from the virus, delivered by its technical lead of infection prevention and control Benedetta Allegranzi.

In the description of the first video, WHO said that the reason they joined TikTok is to offer the public timely and accurate information on the Coronavirus.
TikTok has been filled with misinformation and memes about COVID-19 in the last few weeks. In one case, a user claimed that his friend was the first patient to carry the virus in Canada.
Joining TikTok is part of WHO’s effort to fight off fake news that may cause unnecessary panic among the public. In fact, the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) and WHO have spent as much effort on correcting misinformation on TikTok, Facebook, Tencent, and Twitter as containing the virus.
Tech giants have joined the fight against fake news about the virus. Google has made WHO’s information as top results when users search for the Coronavirus. When people scroll their Facebook newsfeed, they will also see messages advising them to visit the government’s official website. TikTok and Twitter have done the same by directing anyone searching for COVID-19 to WHO sites.
WHO has also leverage Instagram to provide the public with the most accurate information. Scrolling down the feed of the agency and you will find infographics on measures users can take to protect themselves.
