On Monday, the FIDO Alliance and the World Wide Web Consortium announced that WebAuthn will now be an official web login standard and this would replace the traditional passwords.
According to a press release from the organizations, people are aware that passwords are no longer an efficient way for security. They say that 81 percent of data breaches are contributed by default, weak, or stolen passwords and using passwords takes too much time and resources.

The FIDO Alliance and W3C say that WebAuthn, or Web Authentication, is a standard for browsers and platforms that enables stronger and simpler authentication. With WebAuthn, users can log in to their accounts on the Internet with their preferred device, FIDO security keys or biometrics.
Right now, users of many operating system like: Windows 10, Google Chrome, Android, Microsoft Edge, Apple Safari, and Mozilla Firefox can enjoy this standard already. Considering the fact that WebAuthn has become an official standard, you can think about dropping passwords. This means you would not have to remember your passwords anymore.
It enables fingerprint logins
With this new application of WebAuthn, passwords are becoming less and less popular. In February, the giant search engine Google has said that Android is certified by FIDO2 which the Android users can now log in to their accounts with fingerprints and security keys rather than using passwords. Users of Android 7 and higher versions will be affected by this change, accounting for 50 percent of all Android users which equals about a billion devices.
