US Ship Has Burned For 3 Days, 82 People Injured In Total So Far

While tug boats and helicopters continue to dump water on the deck and hull, smoke is still pouring out from the US ship, burning for three days now.

Twenty-one people were injured after the USS Bonhomme Richard ship exploded and burnt at the US Naval Base, according to US Navy officials. CNN cited the US Navy saying:

“Seventeen Sailors and four civilians are being treated for non-life threatening injuries at a local hospital.”

The sailors had minor injuries and were taken to the hospital. They are in stable condition, as stated by US Navy officials on Sunday.

The fire alarm on the ship went off on Sunday morning, Mónica Muñoz from SDFD stated. Several agencies worked to contain the blaze.

USA Today reported earlier today that the ship has burned for three days now. The USS Bonhomme Richard is a small aircraft carrier, which is now heavily damaged from the fire that started from below its flight deck. Rear Adm. Philip Sobeck said that the fire crews could put out the fire in the next 24 hours, “Significant progress has been made.”

While tug boats and helicopters continue to dump water on the deck and hull, smoke is still pouring out. The fire releases heat of 1,000 degrees and has damaged the ship’s superstructure.

It was stated by Sobeck that the ship is now in a stable condition and its fuel tanks are not threatened by flames or heat anymore.

It remains unclear what caused the fire and as of now, there are two fires at the front and rear of this ship. In efforts to put out the fire, 61 firefighters were injured, including 38 from the Navy. All the injuries are minor and nobody remains in the hospital.

Replacing the USS Bonhomme Richard would cost about $4 billion if the ship can’t be repaired. We will have to wait until the fire is put out for the damage assessment.
