This futuristic city of Toyota will be a smart city with autonomous vehicles, artificial intelligence, robots, and smart homes.

What do you think life in the future will be like? Smart cities with autonomous vehicles, artificial intelligence, robots, and smart homes would be most people’s answers. It is exactly what Toyota wants to do with this city of the future. The Japanese company wants to build the city at the base of Mount Fuji in Japan on a 175-acre site. The city would be named Woven City and will run on hydrogen fuel cells. Toyota’s purpose in building such a city is to bring together all the cutting edge technologies.

President of Toyota Motor Corporation, Akio Toyoda, said:

Streets

Toyota wants to categorize the streets of the futuristic city into three different types

  • Streets for fast vehicles
  • Streets for fast and slower vehicles
  • For pedestrian and personal mobility such as e-scooters.

Why does Toyota want to categorize the streets like this? The idea is to designate specific areas for driverless vehicles.

Buildings

Buildings would be made completely from wood using robotic production methods and traditional Japanese wood joinery.

Obviously, a futuristic city will need to generate energy in a green and clean way. Therefore, Toyota wants Woven City to become a sustainable city. Buildings would be made completely from wood using robotic production methods and traditional Japanese wood joinery. By doing this, the carbon footprint would be minimized.

Toyota will cover the rooftops of these buildings with solar panels. Therefore, the main energy of the city will come from these panels and hydrogen fuel cells.

Native vegetation, as well as hydroponics, will be used outside of the city’s buildings.

Homes

The citizens will experience the latest technologies including in-home robots and sensor-based AI.

When stepping inside their houses, the citizens will experience the latest technologies including in-home robots and sensor-based AI. All the technologies will be connected to take into account the citizens’ health and basic needs.

Mobility

These vehicles will be used in the Tokyo Olympics 2020 and in Woven city.

On the streets of Woven City will run the state-of-the-art vehicles including fully autonomous, zero-emission vehicles. At CES 2018, Toyota unveiled the Toyota e-Palletes. These vehicles will be used in the Tokyo Olympics 2020 and in Woven city.

Recreation

A city would be incomplete if it doesn’t a proper recreational establishment.

A city would be incomplete if it doesn’t a proper recreational establishment. Toyota plans on equipping Woven City with a central plaza, a large central park, and neighborhood parks for social gatherings.

Residents

The citizens of the city would be employees of Toyota Motor Corporation and their families, retailers, retired couples, industry partners and visiting scientists. At first, there will be around 2,000 people living in the city. And as the project evolves, there will be more people.

The project will begin in early 2021.
