We cannot forget the incident where an elephant was trying to cross the railway tracks and was hit by a train and mauled to death in West Bengal. His death has resulted in a lot of outrage and questioned have been raised about the authorities’ preparedness to prevent the human-animal conflict from happening.
It seems like people are having with the idea of using simple technology to reduce the human-elephant conflict.
IFS Susanta Nanda recently shared a video from an African news channel. The video talks about how the Tanzanian authorities are deploying to prevent the elephants from crossing into human territory.
From the drones, sounds of bees or lions are emitted, to scare the elephants so that they go into the other directions. This technology is reportedly being deployed in Tamil Nadu so that the elephants would not cross railway tracks when there is a train running.
According to The Hindu, a simple drone that weighs around 3kg costs Rs 5 lakh. In Tamil Nadu, six drones were allocated to different places. Two were assigned to Coimbatore. This is the location where there had been an increase in the number of human-elephant conflict incidents. And the results were said to be promising.
Using drones is a simple technology to prevent both elephants and humans from getting hurt. Therefore, the authorities should really consider deploying drones in other parts across the country, especially in West Bengal which has witnessed a high number of such incidents.
