In the image below lies the Bloodhound supersonic car. Yes, a supersonic car. A car that reaches the speed of 322 km/h or even faster, a car so fast that you can only hear it coming after it passes by. Imagine that, and imagine you in it. Pretty crazy, right?
In the fall of 2017, the Bloodhound reached the 322 km/h mark in a test drive at Cornwall Airport, the highest speed ever achieved during many years of effort in the project. The Bloodhound supersonic car project is preparing for the next speed test, scheduled for October 2019, and this time the goal is to hit the striking 805km/h mark. In order to reach such spectacular speed, a lot of preparation work has to be done, not only for the car but for the road that it runs on, too. The Bloodhound team has started building a special track on a salt pan in South Africa.
Ian Warhurst, the project executive said:
Building a vehicle that can reach supersonic speed is never an easy task, especially on land where surface friction and air drag are the largest. Behind this speed devil lies the over-10-year effort of an innovative engineering team from Britain. These talented people are using the most cutting-edge technology to support them in adding more power and speed to the Bloodhound. The team “test the car’s design using computational fluid dynamics,” allowing them to “gather and share data about the car’s performance in real-time,” said Warhurst.
The test drive in October is just one step to the team’s dream of breaking the world’s land speed record. Their goal is to break the 1,228 km/h mark, a milestone first achieved by a Royal Air Force fighter pilot.
