If you had $233,000 (or Rs 1.75 crore) in your hand right now, what would you do?
That’s a lot of money and can help you solve a lot of problems, buy a lot of things, especially when we are going through a tough time with COVID-19. However, a person spent it on a Pokémon card.

The Illustrator Pikachu is a famous card, wanted by a lot of people in Pokémon Trading Card circles. And a US buyer just paid $233,000 for a mint condition item of this card at Japanese auction house ZenPlus. This is the highest amount anyone has ever spent on a Pokémon card, the previous record was $195,000 (or Rs 1.46 crore), which was made in 2019 also on an Illustrator Pikachu card.
If you’re wondering why a tiny Pokémon card can cost so much, the reason is that there were only 39 units made. And unlike other rare cards, you could not find an Illustrator Pikachu card in a booster pack because it was awarded to the winners of a 1998 comic contest.

Since the franchise remains very popular to this day, it’s not surprising that a Pokémon Trading Card can still be sold for five figures. In 2019, a guy paid $60,000 (Rs 44.9 lakh) for a rare card only to get it lost in the mail.
At the end of the day, the one with the most profit is the seller of these cards. While saying goodbye to a card from their collection, they get a big check. The seller of the $233,000 Pikachu card is also selling a set of three rare Secret Trainer cards for $195,000.
