In spite of the great evolvement of space telescopes that create opportunities for researchers to understand further about the universe, there remains a myriad of phenomena being mysterious to the human being. Exemplify for this fact, although the dark matter, which is the predominant element creating the universe, is widely known, no telescope has had the ability to capture it because its nature is not only elusive but invisible as well.
In the past, a model of the universe was created thanks to the help of artificial intelligence. In the meantime, we are aware of the fact that the cosmos are spun together with filaments that gather galaxies to establish clusters. After that, many large empty spaces come up, covering these filaments. This leads to the discovery of the cosmic microwave background which enabled us to imagine the shape of the universe in its initial stage. However, if we want to decode the nature of dark matter and its energy, we still need to know how these structures evolved to the current shape.
In order to clarify the distribution of the dark matter, a group of researchers from Kyoto University, Japan has developed an AI device using the fastest astrophysical simulation supercomputers in the world - ATERUI and ATERUI II. In the recent report, the machine is being called “Dark Emulator” which has data recorded by the world’s largest observatories. Therefore, astronomers can research the possibilities of the initial cosmic structures, which then simulate a completed virtual universe by machine learning.
To prepare for the research, information was collected in more or less than three years. As said by Takahiro Nishimichi, the leader of the astronomer group, he could sense the great potential of data science. Through the full use of their result, they are able to uncover the nature of dark energy, which is also known as the greatest mystery remaining in modern physics.
Moreover, the team also expects in the application of their device in the upcoming surveys and other fields like natural sciences or social sciences. Their research is now available in the Astrophysical Journal.
