Shields are what police often use to cover their faces and bodies as well as push protesters or criminals off in riots. But how protective are police shields actually? A YouTuber called Edwin Sarkissian decides to test the effectiveness of police shields by shooting arrows at them, let’s see how that turns out.
We’re seeing how these riot shields deal with different types of arrow shots and bows. The shields used in the video seem just enough to push back people, they’re not really designed to stop any firearms and things like that. But we will see what happens with different arrows.
In the first test, Edwin uses these field tips or practice tips, they’re not really fancy or designed for hunting mainly for you to practice. The arrow didn’t go through the shield but it left a hole in the shield and cracked the back. Then Edwin shoots the arrow again, aiming at the glass part. This time, the arrow went through the shield but didn’t really affect the glass, it instead hit the edge. He tries the third time and the arrow goes through the shield right in the middle of the glass part, about 12 centimeters.
In the second test, Edwin uses another bow that shoots arrows at 106 meters per second and field tips. This time, the arrow goes about two-thirds of its length through the shield, which could have hit the face of anyone behind it. Then, he puts a jug filled with red liquid behind the nearest shield and tries shooting it with a broadhead tip that’s normally used for hunting. The slow-motion video shows that the arrow goes through the first shield, the jug, and goes inside the second shield.
In the third test, he switches to the Nitro XRT crossbow that shoots arrows at 143 meters per second. The arrow goes all the way through the first shield, leaving a hole in it, then goes inside the second shield and breaks in half. Then Edwin takes another try, using the same bow and arrow but with a different broadhead that the last one. This time, the arrow goes all the way through the first shield, goes inside the second shield, breaks, and its broadhead hits the third shield.
So, it looks like these police shields can protect users from some basic attack, but if someone really means to harm them, the shields will be pretty much useless.
