NASA is sending the Perseverance rover to Mars and while not all of us can directly contribute anything to the launch, we can do so remotely. What the space agency offers this time is the chance to send your name to the red planet, take pictures on the red planet, or next to NASA’s rover.

The rover will make a 7-month long journey to Mars and touch down in Jezero Crater, an ancient lakebed with lots of geology values.

The Perseverance rover

The rover will collect soil samples and rocks, as well as looking into the planet’s geology and climate to prepare for sending humans to the red planet.

The Perseverance also has the Ingenuity Mars Helicopter onboard, human’s first attempt to make controlled flights on the red planet.

As there are restrictions in place to prevent crowd gathering at the launch site, NASA encourages the public to support and watch the endeavor remotely.

If you are interested in being part of a historical launch, here are what you can do to join:

CountdownToMars

Countdown until the rocket blasts off and record yourself doing so. Next, post the clip on social media with hashtag #CountdownToMars. If you are lucky, the video might be featured on NASA’s accounts, or better, on the official launch day.

Here is how you can participate.

Send Your Name to Mars

Your boarding pass

Perseverance has on it a small chip containing 10.9 million names submitted by people from all over the world. Those who signed up for this can have a stamp that reads “Now Boarding.”

If you like this idea and have missed the opportunity last time, submit your name here to send your name to Mars on board a spacecraft launching in 2026.

Mars Photo Booth

Having a photo with the Atlas V rocket, or on Mars sound intriguing enough, and with Mars Photo Booth, you can have a picture of yourself taken in this way.

Simply submit your favorite photo, choose a background, and download the new picture.

Virtual Launch Packet

Virtual Launch Packet is a flipbook that provides everything there is to know about the mission. Here is the link to download it.
