On May 16, both big tech companies including Microsoft and Sony just made an announcement on their strategic collaboration. Accordingly, these companies will work with each other to develop image sensors. Besides, Sony could make use of Microsoft’s cloud designed for media and streaming games.
Both Microsoft and Sony haven’t yet revealed many details in this time’s partnership and their deal is just in the initial stages. In the upcoming time, the Xbox platform of Microsoft and PlayStation of Sony will team up to bring content and game streaming to their consumers, as well as provide many development tools for game makers.
According to Kenichiro Yoshida, the Chief Executive Officer of Sony,
Along with the new deal, Microsoft’s business concerning Azure cloud computing platform has harvested a lot of benefits. As a piece of evidence, the company's market value hit more than $1 trillion in April 2019. In addition, the Redmond-based company has enough power to compete with Amazon Web Services from Amazon.com Inc.
Although Amazon has just entered the gaming market, game makers have an opportunity to approach its new technology tools. In the past, the company acquired Twitch – the leading live streaming platform for gamers in the world – for about $1 billion to bolster its AWS.
Sony from Japan is known as an outstanding manufacturer that provides camera chipsets for smartphones and many other devices. Along with both companies’ partnership, they aim to develop new chipsets for image sensors in an effort to bring Microsoft’s AI technology to business customers. The types of chosen chipsets have been a secret.
In terms of advantages of intelligent cameras, they can be used as an efficient tool to help users to find out defective items in manufacturing lines better than what human inspectors can do.
Both Microsoft and Sony stated that they would partner with each other to research how they can use AI tools of Microsoft in consumer products from Sony “to provide highly intuitive and user-friendly AI experiences.”
Some technologies of Microsoft such as image recognition and human speech recognition are allegedly able to compete with those of more famous rivals like Google of Alphabet Inc. However, Microsoft mainly focuses on targets as business customers, and therefore, it doesn’t have a lot of outlets that specialize in technologies. That’s another story with the Japanese brand, Sony because it mainly aims to manufacture and offer a variety of TVs, smartphones, as well as many other consumer products.
