Police reported that the incident happened in Dulapally lake located in Medchal district in June 10.

The victim, identified as Narasimha, went down into the water to shoot a video for TikTok. Narasimha, along with Prashanth, his friend, danced in the water to music. Later, he was there posing while his friend was filming with a smartphone from a distance.

Narasimha slipped and drowned himself since the water was deep and he could not swim. Although Prashanth looked for help, nobody could come. The body of Narasimha was recovered by the police on June 11.

The short video-sharing platform TikTok has taken India by storm. The app is reportedly to have more than 100 mil monthly active users.

This isn’t the first time that TikTok has caused somebody’s death.

On June 13, a 24-year-old mother of two from Tamil Nadu committed suicide after her husband had scolded her for spending too much time on the app.

Back in January, a 15-year-old Mumbai resident hung herself at her house right on her birthday after being scolded by her grandmother for constantly using Tiktok.

In April, 19-year-old Salman Zahir from Delhi was shot by his friends on the face while trying to film a TikTok video.

Such alarming incidences have led to an interim ban from the Madras High Court on the mobile app for hosting pornographic and inappropriate content.

Considering the case from advocate Muthukumar, the interim order was vacated by the bench on condition that the app will not host any pornographic videos. Failure to meet the condition will lead to the ban in effect again.
