3D Printers Can Create Fingerprints Able To Trick Galaxy S10’s Security System

All he needs is a 3D printer, a photo of his own fingerprint to fool his Samsung Galaxy S10

A Reddit user has recently fooled the in-screen fingerprint sensor of the Samsung Galaxy S10 with a 3D printer and a picture of his finger. He took a photo of his fingerprint on a wine glass, highlighted the ridges, and then printed it out with his 3D printer. The whole process took about 13 minutes. The sensor calls for capacity input, so he had to apply a force on the printing model with his fingers or knuckle.

Here is how it works:

When the test was put on Instagram, a user said that he had key copies made in a similar way and they can unlock doors.

The man behind this test said that by doing the same thing with other people’s fingerprint, he could gain access to their phones, even with the ultrasonic in-display sensor in place, which raised a concern over the possibility of sensitive apps, like ones for banking, can be hacked with just a sample of the owner’s fingerprint, which is all over the phone, and a 3D printer.

The Reddit user said that anyone could steal a phone, print out your fingerprint in less than 10 minutes, get access to your bank account and take all your money. And you, in the meantime, might still be on your way home to report the incident.

This is not the first time a fingerprint sensor is fooled. Older generations have been proven to respond to high-resolution photos of owners’ fingerprint.

A more secure method to keep your personal information safe is to use the facial recognition method, the one you can find on iPhones with the name Face ID. However, this is not a secured measure. Like a fingerprint, a mask resembles the facial features of a person can also be made, but this process is way more complex and time-consuming than printing out a fingerprint.
