Researchers Creates A Chip To Bring Quantum And Classical Computing Closer

A team of researchers in Japan is developing new hardware which could close the gap between quantum and classical computing.

These days we hear a lot about Quantum Computers. They are the very powerful machines that could process the information on the subatomic level. However, the current standard computers that we have to not have the needed capabilities like with a true quantum computer. To resolve that problem, a team of researchers has developed new hardware to close the gap between standard computers and quantum computers.

Closing The Gap

They have created this new piece of hardware for the “probabilistic” computer with the name of p-bits. That computer could perform the calculation on the comparable level with a true quantum computer.

It serves as the base to build probabilistic computers.

This new piece of hardware is the work of a team of engineers at the  Tohoku University & Purdue University in Japan. It serves as the base to build probabilistic computers. These computers then could be used to solve problems effectively in financial services, data analysis, cybersecurity and encryption, and drug research.

The Natural journal has published this new study. Our regular computers store data in the ones and zeroes form, which is called bits. While the quantum computer stores date at both one and zero, which is called qubits.

P-bit

This new innovative research shows the concept of the probabilistic computer, which uses p-bit. This p-bit could be one or zero at any time, and they could also rapidly change between those two values. More importantly, p-bit can work at normal room temperatures. That makes them much more adaptable than the qubits, which requires much colder temperatures to operate.

The team also mentioned that we could use the new p-bit to improve machine learning technology.

Professor of Computer Engineering & Electrical at  Purdue University, Supriyo Datta has commented on the research. He said that we could use p-bits to solve many problems that qubits are capable of solving. He also added that p-bit is the qubit of the poor man.
