The United States Air Force recently announced a new artificial intelligence (AI) program called "Skyborg". Scientists hope that automatic technology will be developed strongly and used to control fighters and drones without drivers in the next few years.
According to The Drive's report, drone flights will be expectedly available in 2021 and flights of fighter aircrafts available in 2023. AI integrated into Skyborg will help human pilots handle complex situations when they are in aerial battles. The AI will be aware of everything around and give suggestions about the possible best actions to pilots in urgent and complex situations.
Will Roper, the Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Acquisition, Technology, and Logistics, said that these developments may not be as cool and epic as what you see on film, but it will be an important key and change the entire fighting technology.
It sounds like they're building a Skynet - a villain in the famous movie Terminator. The US Air Force has made very specific requirements for contractors who want to participate in building Skyborg, including the ability to automatically land, take off and open software. This allows engineers to upgrade Skyborg's ability whenever and in a short time.
The Air Force wants this project to be feasible and can be applied on a large scale, so they want the product to be created with a balance of quality and price. They must be able to operate long-term, stable and not too expensive for them to replicate it.
Roper added that during the program introduction, they did not want this project to be just a laboratory development. They expect this program to really work and grow in the next few years.
This is not the first time AI has been introduced into military applications. The US Navy has built an autonomous combat ship project. In addition, Russia is also developing new robotic tanks equipped with new semi-autonomous and Britain is building battle drones with the integration of AI.
It can be said that autonomous technology to control battle equipment is a worrying idea, but it is now being implemented in many parts of the world. Among a series of military AI programs as of now, Skyborg can be considered an essential tool in the race of artificial intelligence in fighting.
