A cosmonaut, Sergei Prokopyev, said that the hole might be drilled from the inside of the capsule but he believed that it was not the work of an ISS crew.

August saw an incident that could put the life of crew in the ISS (short for International Space Station) in danger. That was a leak through which air escaped. At that time, Russia thought this could have been an act of sabotage.

According to the Russian cosmonaut who also participates in the investigation in a spacewalk, the culprit appeared to drill the hole from the inside of the station. However, he did not think that this is sabotage.

Space has long been one of the rare fields that encourage international coordination in science, but this incident and speculations surround it is a prime example of how conflict on Earth can create tension here.

However, it is not without a solution. What the cosmonaut said and its effect suggest that in case strained relations occur, a public figure’s opinion might be the best way out.

More on this matter, at a press conference, Sergei Prokopyev, the Russian cosmonaut in question, said after he returned to the Earth that whoever responsible for the hole, did it from inside the capsule. He also shared his thought about the culprit. Prokopyev doubted earlier conjecture that someone belongs to the ISS crew is the offender.

His best guess so far is that the hole might be the result of a manufacturing facility on Earth and the public should not jump into conclusion about the integrity of the crew.

When the hole was first found out, the space agency of Russia thought that it was the result of a micrometeorite. However, days after that announcement, the director of the agency came up with the speculation that this was an act of sabotage. What he suggested was that evidence of drilling attempts was found.

Sergei Prokopyev, on the other hand, had a more professional attitude toward this incident. He reported what he found but did not share a conclusive judgment.
