One of the biggest tasks of medicinal researchers around the world have to face is finding the cure for cancers. Among them is brain cancer whose survival rate is just 10% in a 5-year period. However, a group of student researchers with an Indian-born doctor as a leader, have discovered a cure to help patients having brain cancer heal and recover.
Students from the University of Findlay College of Pharmacy in Ohio were the ones to create a chemical compound which proves to be beneficial in treating brain cancer.
Dr. Rahul Khupse, a medicinal chemistry professor from the university said:
The students were researching Glioblastoma, an adaptable and aggressive form of brain cancer that couldn’t be easily cured with conventional medicine methods. The reason for this is that it is not easy finding a strong enough chemical which can go through the blood-brain barrier for harmful cell elimination.
The students found a set of chemical compounds capable of getting rid of harmful cells that are affected with Glioblastoma. Among these, RK-15 proved to be the best one. Jacob Reyes who was a member of the group said that RK-15 was a smart enough compound that it could only strike the harmful cells while still leaving the healthy brain tissue.
By providing kids with a hands-on experience like this discovery really help better prepare them for the future.
Reyes said:
The team will start testing the chemical compound on animals. And if the results are positive, their discovery might be released on the market to save brain cancer patients’ lives.
