Smartphone Sold In India in Q3 2019 Reached Record High; Topped By Xiaomi

According to Counterpoint, the number of smartphones sold in India in Q3 this year reached a record high and top of the chart is Xiaomi.

According to statistics from Counterpoint's Market Monitor, the mobile industry in India has witnessed a 10% growth compared to the same period last year.

In the last quarter, there were 49 million units sold in the Indian market. Counterpoint said this overall growth is likely to be achieved by the launch of the device at the time before the Diwali holiday, strong marketing strategy and discounts.

Occupying a 26% market share, Xiaomi is still the leader in smartphone sales in India. The company achieved unprecedentedly high sales despite a 1% market share decline from 27% in Q3 2018. Samsung came in second, while Vivo, Realme, and Oppo lined up at a fairly close distance behind each other.

Despite efforts to recapture the budget segment in India, Samsung's Galaxy M series did not seem to help the company in improving overall sales last quarter. The South Korean phone maker lost 3% of the market share it held just a year ago. According to Samsung, the M series is still relatively new, and it will take some time for this product line to gain the trust of users like the Galaxy A and Galaxy S series.

At the top of the rankings, Xiaomi is looking to get rid of the "cheap" image that people have long thought of when it comes to Xiaomi. The company has been launching more and more high-end devices - maybe that's what it needs to maintain its leading position in India. If Xiaomi's new Mi Mix Alpha has not proven this then no device can do that.

Among the top 5 manufacturers, Vivo and Realme have the highest growth rates. Besides Xiaomi, the two companies both achieved the highest sales device sales they have ever got in India. Vivo's market share increased by 7% and Realme increased by 13%, proving that they are increasingly competing better with big names.

Every other smartphone maker accounted for 13% of smartphones sold in India in the third quarter, compared to 29% last year. However, OnePlus is currently ranked as the No. 1 premium smartphone brand in the third quarter of 2019. The number of devices sold by the company doubled from last year thanks to the newly launched OnePlus 7 series and comes with many discount programs.

This growth momentum is expected to continue through the rest of the holiday season in India.
