Pixel 4 Recorder App Can Deliver Speech Transcription In Real Time

Pixel 4 of Google has a new voice recorder app which is very much different from the traditional recorder apps. Called Recorder, the app can transcribe your recordings, which is uncommon for voice recorder apps, not to mention free ones. The voice recorder app of Google takes things to a whole new level as the transcriptions will be created in real-time, on-device and without having to connect to the Internet.

For some reason, Google has never released a voice recorder app. While users can download these apps easily from the Google Play Store, most users had always expected to have a built-in one for their previous Pixel phones.

This Recorder app can really do more than most other voice recorders can. For example, Apple’s Voice Memos can just record audio. These recordings are then stored for playback. While on the market, there are some other great transcription apps like Otter, the transcription is usually carried out on a server, which means you need to upload what you record to a third party. Then, you will need to wait for transcription to be processed.

Google can do all of these steps on-device. To do this, the company needs to shrink down a language processing model so that it can run on a phone.

The recording app of Google is also capable of identifying certain sounds such as playing music or applause. At the moment, English is the only language available. But more languages will come later. And it’s worth noting that only the Pixel 4 has this built-in recorder app.

So far, the app looks promising and impressive. A live demo was shown on stage, with the app transcribing what the speaker said. And the transcript proved to be pretty good.
