The under-display selfie camera is one of the most awaited technologies that many people are waiting for this year, including me. When Oppo showcased the first prototype smartphone with an under-display camera in June last year, we had a high hope that it could arrive on a smartphone this year. With rumors about the Oppo Find X2 starting to surface online, many would believe that it could be the first phone from the brand to feature the under-display camera.
Sadly, Oppo VP Brian Shen has just shared a new piece of information on his Twitter page that might disappoint a lot of people. On his Tweet, Shen confirmed that it is unlikely that the Find X2 would have an under-display selfie camera and the tech hasn’t been ready to be mass-produced. However, he used the word 'unlikely', which means there is still a very small chance of seeing the tech on the Find X2.
Even if it doesn't happen, it is quite understandable as the prototype the company showcased last year had several key issues that needed to be solved. The brand needs to use a highly transparent material with a redesigned pixel structure to make the specific area of the screen above the selfie camera. With that, the camera sensor can get optimal light transmittance to deliver high-quality photos like a normal sensor.
Moreover, Oppo probably hasn’t found a way to solve the photo quality issue despite the brand implementing a lot of special algorithms. However, with all of these difficulties, there is still hope that we can see an Oppo smartphone with an under-display selfie camera in the near future.
In another tweet, Shen said that the display of the Find X2 will still be the company’s main focus and it will carry a lot of other industry-leading features. Moreover, with the Snapdragon 865 SoC and 50W wireless rapid charging technology as previously rumored, the Oppo Find X2 is still an interesting phone to wait for despite the lack of an under-display camera.
