Google Pixel 4, Pixel 4 XL Unveiled With Dual Rear Cameras And Motion Sense

Newly-launched Google Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL key specifications include dual rear cameras, Snapdragon 855 SoC, 90Hz displays, and Motion Sense.

Google has unveiled its Pixel 4/4 XL phones at a New York-based event. The handsets have various improvements over its predecessors – Pixel 3/3 XL. The biggest upgrade is the dual cameras on the back. Both the 4 and 4XL are the first devices in the series to have over one sensor in the rear camera module look like the one on the iPhone 11 Pro. This module is expected to enhance the imaging capabilities of the phones. Additionally, the devices come with a display with 90Hz refresh rate and a Snapdragon 855 SoC. It also has Motion Sense that allows users to wave their hands to control certain aspects of the handset like silencing phone calls and skipping songs. Unfortunately, because of this technology, the company will not be offering this series phones in the Indian market.

While the regular Pixel 4 costs from US$799 (roughly Rs. 56,000), the 4XL has the starting price of US$899 (approximately Rs. 64,000). It is known that the handsets come in three color options including Just Black, Clearly White and Oh So Orange. The 4 flaunts a 5.7-inch Full HD+ OLED “smooth” screen with a screen refresh rate of 90Hz. Unlike Pixel 3, the phone has thick top bezel to avoid notch design for housing the selfie shooter as well as other sensors. As aforementioned, the new series comes with Project Soli-backed Motion Sense technology. The tech allows users to unlock their devices via face recognition, swipe gestures for skipping songs, silence phone calls, and more. Additionally, it also has apps in healthcare and gaming, etc. It will also be contextually aware and can distinguish between accidental waves and intended swipes in front of the phone. However, it is quite a pity that Motion Sense is only available in certain markets without India.

The phone’s rear panel comes with a glass protective layer for the wireless charging with a camera cut-out at the upper left corner. The regular 4 features a Snapdragon 855 chipset, coupled with 6GB RAM + 64GB/128GB internal storage. Those buying the phone can use free Google One’s cloud storage of up to 100GB for 3 months. The device also has support for Active Edge to quickly access Google Assistant with just a gentle squeeze and Pixel Stand.

In the camera department, the phone has a dual rear camera setup including a 12MP main sensor and a 16MP telephoto sensor. On the front, it features an 8MP camera for video calling and taking selfies. The company has applied many new features for the phone’s cameras. One of which is astrophotography that combines Night Sight mode with long exposure in order to stitch together various images of the night sky to offer an image output that can capture the stars in the sky. Also, Google also upgraded Portrait Mode, which lets users capture photos of the subjects at larger distance without reducing the quality of the images. Furthermore, Dual Exposure Camera Control allows users to darken or lighten photo parts of photos captured in disadvantaged lighting environments.

In terms of software, the phone runs Android 10 with Pixel Launcher and a customizable interface at launch. The device has IP68 dust and water resistance, stereo speakers, Titan M chip for security, and Pixel Neural Core for built-in machine learning. Powering the phone is a 2,700 mAh cell with support for the 18W fast charging tech.

The 4 also comes with the latest Google Assistant launched at the I/O 2019 conference in earlier 2019. The assistant allegedly runs on-device and is able to offer a request processing speed which is up to 10 times higher than the previous-gen Assistant. Additionally, it can process task to task without saying “Hey, Google” word each time.
