Samsung surpassed Sony in the production of smartphone cameras when it launched ISOCELL Bright GW1. This is the world's first 64MP sensor for smartphones. Although it has a higher resolution than Samsung's current 48-megapixel sensor, ISOCELL Bright GW1 still uses pixels of the same size 0.8μm. This means the new sensor will be larger in size and able to capture more light.
By default, Bright GW1 will merge four pixels to generate 16MP photos in normal usage, the same way that current 48MP sensors produce images with resolutions of 12 megapixels. This allows users to capture clearer and sharper images even when lighting conditions are poor. A thin smartphone can hold various features but does not have much space for a large sensor. So this Samsung technology merging four pixels into one may help the camera capture as many details as possible with software adjusting for the limitations.
Besides, ISOCELL Bright GW1 can descramble the color filter to generate shots of full 64MP resolution. Right now, the IMX586 48MP sensor from Sony carries a similar capability but Samsung hasn't had one like that yet. Now, the Korean giant is announcing an updated 48MP part with the same feature.
The resolution is a measure of how large an image you can capture. Usually, the size of the sensor and the depth of each pixel are important and greatly affect the image quality.
Various famous smartphone manufacturers like Oppo, Xiaomi, Vivo, Huawei, and Samsung are currently using 48-megapixel cameras on their smartphones.
Samsung hopes that its 64-megapixel sensor will be put into mass production in the last six months of 2019. If the plan goes smoothly, ISOCELL Bright GW1 will probably be equipped in Samsung flagship models that might be released in August or September this year. Samsung may want this chip to be launched soon as Sony, the market leader in image sensors, launches its own 64-megapixel smartphone sensor chip.
