Earlier this month, Apple gave everyone a first look at iOS 13. This is one of the biggest changes for the iPhone in recent years. At WWDC 2019, Apple brought competition with Facebook, Snapchat, Amazon, and Google.
There are some subtle comparisons on the screen, smug, and winking ad-libs about other competitors that Apple thinks are less secure and private. Even Apple will feature its rival with Bitstrips, a Canadian –based company currently under Snapchat, founded in 2007.
Apple’s WWDC always focuses on trade issues and is primarily geared towards developers who aim at making billions of dollars through iPhone services, applications, and games. This year, Apple focused more on privacy, perhaps that competition in the smartphone market increased and enhanced security.
Based on the features announced, here is a summary of several ways Apple is going after its rivals this year.
11. Apple Maps follows Google Street View
Apple executive Meg Frost announced a new Apple Maps feature that looks quite similar to the Street View of Google. The data on the map is collected over hundreds of aircraft and cars. This feature is beautifully displayed on Apple's high-resolution device, making the image of the street on the map extremely lively.
10. Swipe to text on iMessage
This feature is not new to Android users. For over ten years now, Android phone users can swipe to text and it's really convenient. Now, that familiar swipe function will appear for the first time on the iPhone, called "Quick Path" keyboard.
9. Dark Mode
The iPhone released in September running iOS 13 will have Dark Mode. This mode is now available on Android Q.
8. HomeKit
This program now offers the new 'HomeKit Secure Video' feature, letting users connect to their cameras mounted at the front door. According to Federighi, the video recording someone in front of your house will not be analyzed in the cloud. Instead, the system will send the footage to their devices like Apple TV, HomePod and iPad. Here, it will be encrypted before being sent to iCloud.
Google's Nest, on the other hand, doesn't encrypt the videos. According to Ring, an Amazon company, encryption will reduce the company's value. Logitech, Eufy, and Netatmo will be companies that produce front-facing cameras that are connected to HomeKit's video encoding.
7. Reminders get noticeable upgrades
If users often use Gmail, Google Calendar will be a more natural choice because their convenience and appointments are timely reminded. Apple wants iPhone users to use its calendar by linking it to the Reminders app. Perhaps this significant improvement of this Reminders app will help Apple directly compete with Google Calendar.
6. Siri also takes after Google
Airpods will also have a new feature where users can listen as well as respond to messages when wearing the device. Google itself has released the same feature with Pixel buds and it works really well. Perhaps Apple has realized this and put this feature into iOS 13 and Airpods. “Just like that, Siri helps you stay in the moment,” said Stacy Lysik, Apple’s Senior Director of OS Program Management.
5. Memoji Avatars
The Cupertino-based company launched Memoji avatars and will be a direct competitor to Bitmoji, a custom avatar of Bitstrips. Memoji Avatar will have a mode of operation similar to Bitmoji like opening a menu from the keyboard. It may be bad news for Bitmoji.
4. Delete duplicate images to save space
The Files app is among Google Pixel's best features, which allows users to delete files that take up space on their phones. For example, it will announce the number of memes or duplicate images that are occupying a lot of your space and should be removed. The AI-based feature will come to iPhones running iOS 13. Federighi said the biggest change in 2019 lies in the way we browse photos.
3. Sign in with Apple
Many users use Google or Facebook accounts to log into an application to save time instead of having to go through account creation steps. At the same time, they can keep their apps under a single account, helping them avoid having to remember a new password. However, the price to pay for convenience is that Facebook and Google can track the applications you use and those applications can access your data on Facebook and Google. This shows that selling personal data is becoming more and more obvious.
Apple said that users are almost unable to grasp what data is collected and sold by companies. The company will use this opportunity to create its position when placing data security on top. Tim Cook said:
iOS 13 allows users to use their Apple account to make login information and shared data. To protect your email from marketing emails, users can use a random proxy email address which will forward to your actual address.
2. Location data
Apps keep track of your location, or if you are not using them, they still secretly follow you without consent. However, they can also be used with good intentions, such as improving applications in certain locations. However, negative examples are more numerous than positive. Typically, this location data collection can help investors create more powerful data sets used for raising money from investors or sell them.
Apple has made improvements in iOS 13 notification settings. Users will receive notifications about an application that is keeping track of your location. This shows that Apple has interfered between users and third-party applications to protect your privacy. Apple requires applications on iOS 13 to ask users for permission to track their location. Additionally, Apple will not allow applications to detect the location of wifi and Bluetooth because it can reveal your location.
1. Unknown number calls will be taken directly to voice mail
Screening calls from an unknown number is among the best features that Google Pixel phones can offer. Apple also continues to embark on blocking robocall calls. However, your iPhone will put unknown called to voicemail instead of using artificial intelligence to screen calls.
