In what is considered one of the largest updates in WhatsApp’s history, the app will stop working on some older devices next year. According to the developers of WhatsApp, the reason for this was the company no longer develop some features for these devices’ operating systems, so certain functions will cease to work.
WhatsApp For Windows Phone
Windows Phone is reaching the end of its life. WhatsApp has already stopped supporting and updating its app on this operating system. In fact, you might not see the app on Microsoft Store anymore.
After the 31st of December 2019, the app will no longer work on Windows Phone devices.
Android Phones And Tablets
For now, WhatsApp is not available on devices with an operating system older than 2.3.7. Those who own smartphones running Android version 2.3.7 to 4.0.3 have until the first of February, 2020 before the app stop working altogether.
Users have an Android version earlier than 4.0.3 cannot re-verify their existing accounts or create new ones. From the first of February, 2020, the app will no longer available for these devices.
iOS for iPhone, iPad
The same deadline is also for iOS versions older than 9. These devices cannot create new accounts or reverify the existing ones after this date. WhatsApp Web is a viable alternative but you have to have a functional app on your mobile device anyway.
So if you belong to any of these groups, update the operating system if you can, otherwise, you may have to say goodbye to the app next year.
