Twitter has upgraded its capability to control direct messages (DMs) to a new level. On August 15, the social networking service revealed that it has tested a new filter that aims at offensive messages.

Accordingly, such messages with suspect content will be saved in a folder called “additional messages.” Twitter users can choose whether to open them or not.

In 2019, Twitter has focused on leveraging technology to detect and flag offensive tweets automatically while users don’t need to intervene. Until its technology can work efficiently, the company is flagging many false positives, as well as leaving out a series of filth. In addition, it is testing a feature called “hide replies” to improve its capability to report offensive tweets.

A lot of the vitriolic and abusive content available on Twitter hails from direct messages created by strangers. More notably, many of these messages aren’t even followed by users. Both people of color and women are the major victims of online harassment.

In case your account can receive direct messages from any other account, the platform will push all of the messages from strangers into a “message requests” folder. Besides, it provides a “quality filter” which aims to remove allegedly “lower-quality” messages our of the folder named “message requests”. To see such suspect messages again, you will have to uncheck this quality filter.

With the new filter, Twitter hopes to bring a more efficient method to control sensitive content. Accordingly, when detecting any suspect message, the platform will hide and replace it with the following line: “This message is hidden because it may contain offensive content.” And then, you can determine to delete or view it.
