The trending app for sharing short videos TikTok has worked together with SPIF (Suicide Prevention India Foundation) to launch a campaign named #YourLifeMatters. This campaign aims to spread awareness about mental health's importance as well as the rising suicide rate in the country.
TikTok and SPIF
For your information, last Tuesday was marked as the World Suicide Prevention Day. As part of that, the in-app campaign has encouraged people to prioritize their self-care, to practice their self-compassion, and to debunk the stigmas on the issues of mental health, thus seeking professional help. According to WHO, India is currently among the top twenty-five countries that have the highest numbers of suicidal cases.
This great partnership between SPIF and TikTok is to reduce the increasing rate of suicide in India. They wish to accomplish that by changing people's perspectives of it to be of a normal health issue along with using the community power to help to solve this alarming issue.
The Gatekeepers
In this initiative, the SPIF has been spreading relatable and short videos via their profile on TikTok (@spif_in). This is an effort to empower the users with the know-how for the role of "Gatekeepers." The term "Gatekeeper" indicates who has got the training to spot people with suicidal signals/ tendencies. Then the "Gatekeeper" would provide assistance to the individuals, then suggest to them a professional in mental health.
Since about 8/10 persons contemplating suicide would give out nonverbal or verbal signs, the "Gatekeepers" could really help to save people lives. This initiative aims to mobilize the massive online community to join hand in preventing people from committing self-harm. A bunch of videos also show suicide survivors share their stories and motive others not to lose hope and to overcome their suicide intention.
Thanks to the dedicated partnership, we all can expect a brighter future for Indian youngsters.
