Google Might Pay Publishers For News

According to Google, what it aims at is to provide people with quality journalism, encourage democracy, and promote a sustainable news industry

As revealed by the Wall Street Journal, Google is currently in talks with publishers about the prospect of them getting paid for having content in one of Google’s new products. The majority of the talks are with partners outside of the U.S, including some European countries.

According to Google, what it aims at is to provide people with quality journalism, encourage democracy, and promote a sustainable news industry. The tech giant also confirmed the information of it is in talks with news partners with programs like Google News Initiative.

The company has been struggling with fake news making its way for its News products. Back in 2018, the Google News Initiative was set up to deal with the problem. Another issue is the laws in some European countries which require tech companies to pay before they can preview news articles.

Google’s idea is not to pay but it will change its way of news displaying.

Whatever the outcome of these talks, this is not the first time the search engine giant pays publishers. In 2019, the search engine giant licensed audio news from well-known names like CNN, Reuters, ABC, The Associated Press, WYNC, Cheddar, PBS, and Fox News Radio. These companies are paid to make their news audio in a format that is compatible with their virtual assistant.

Google is not the only tech giants that have experimented with the idea of paying news publishers either. Before it, Apple and Facebook have done similar things. However, their effort might not save the whole industry.

As Facebook and Google are still collecting the majority of money from ads, publishers are looking for new ways to make a profit. And audio licensing can do little to offset for the loss.
