Facebook rolled out a new feature called “Why Am I Seeing This Ad?” last week, which might offer users a little more transparency in why you see a particular ad.

This tool first came to public attention in April. It tells you why some ads show up in your feed and also what you can do to opt out.

Here is how you can use the feature: Click on the three-dot symbol located at the top-right corner of an ad. Choose “Why am I seeing this ad?”

You have the choice to stop seeing ads from that particular advertiser or even opt out from ads targeting you according to apps or websites outside of Facebook.

To customize your own ad preference, go to Account Settings, Settings, and then Ads.

The feature also lets you opt out from ads with your name on it, which Facebook shows to your friend. The underlying principle is that if your friends see a familiar name on the ad, they are more likely to click on it.

You can also know which advertisers have submitted lists with your information to Facebook.

However, contrary to what many people expect, there is no such thing as an option to stop seeing all ads. So it is advisable to check the ad preference regularly to make sure that you are comfortable with what you see on your feed.
