Facebook Gets 5 Lakh Revenge Porn Reports Each Month

A Monday report said Facebook, which owns WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram, has to assess around 5 lakh reports of revenge porn per month.

For years, social giant Facebook has been creating tools for preventing and removing revenge porn on its platforms. However, it’s obvious that the company has not stopped bad actors from attempting to share such images. The tech giant, which owns WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram, has to assess around 5 lakh reports of revenge porn per month, NBC News reported on Monday.

Earlier this year, the world’s leading social network introduced AI tools that have the ability to detect revenge porn, a.k.a nonconsensual intimate pictures, before users report it. In 2017, Facebook also rolled out a pilot program in which users can submit intimate images to the platform to prevent them from being spread across the network.

But according to the company, the initial explanation about the pilot program was not clear enough. And last year, after receiving negative feedback, Facebook conducted a research program to explore what it could do to prevent revenge porn as well as support victims better.

Facebook’s head of product policy research Radha Plumb said that as the product team knows how terrible it is to have your images shared on the social network, they felt the strong motivation to try and figure out ways to do more than only responding to user reports.

The social network is now reported to have a team consisting of 25 people, content moderators are not part of it. The team focuses on the sharing of nonconsensual intimate videos and images.

Over the past several months, social platforms have been struggling to monitor negative content, not only explicit posts but also violent, depressing content. Though they have come up with ways to better control the issue, it looks like there are no ultimate solutions. Hopefully, social firms will keep working and come up with more effective ideas to protect us.
