For those using old iPhone and iPad models in pre-2012, this news is pretty good: Apple has updated the software to solve a GPS issue on your devices. On Monday, the company has announced updates for iOS to address the problem, which has impacted a lot of devices in a long time.
Back in the 1970s, GPS technology was first created. At that time, computers only had minimal processing ability and engineers coded date in 10-bit format. That means before a system runs out of combinations and has to reset, there are a limited number of dates it can show. Such an issue started surfacing on early April, raising a question that whether some systems would still interpret 2019 as 1980.
According to the company, owners of those old models need to update their devices by November 3 to avoid issues related to time, date, and location. The updated iOS version 10.3.4 will arrive in iPhone 5 and include an upgrade in Wi-Fi and cellular capabilities for the iPad 4th generation. On the other hand, the 9.3.6 version will correspond to iPhone 4 and be expected to additionally cover the 1st-gen iPad Mini, iPad 2 and 3rd-gen iPad Wi-Fi and cellular capabilities as well.
In case you’re still wondering if your iPhone or iPad is already updated or not, you can check it for sure. Head to Settings menu > General > About > Software Version. Those versions should have been listed there.
Apple has also rolled out the iOS 12.4 on Monday, adding more enhancements for Apple News Plus and as well as a feature for data migration, which is able to switch your data directly from your phones during setup.
