Although the MKV files are suitable for HD videos, its support is limited. There are two ways you can play one of these files, one is to find a piece of software capable of doing so, and the second is converting them into a more widely-supported format. If you decide to go for the second way, this guide will show you how.
You usually see MKV files in Blu-ray movies rips or DVD. However, sometimes, it can appear in converted or downloaded videos from YouTube. Whatever the source, MP4 is more common and can be opened on the majority of current devices.
The VLC media player is widely universal as it can play most formats, including the lesser-used MKV. Another handy feature of the software is that it can also do the converting job. Here is how you can make use of the function:
Step 1: If you have not had VLC, go to VideoLAN and get it. Before installing it, read the print carefully to avoid downloading bloatware.
Step 2: Launch the VLC and choose the Media tab, it is at the upper-left corner. Next, from the menu, click on Convert/Save.
Step 3: Select Add and then pick the file you need to convert saved on your computer. Now, choose Convert/Save.
Step 4: You get to choose the target format for the file. The most common one is H.264 + Mp3. You can pick it from the menu near Profile. If you need to tweak the settings, select the tool icon.
Step 5: Now, you need a place to store the converted file. Specifying the location you want with Destination. When you are happy with all the settings, choose Start. Check how far the process has gone by looking at the progress bar at the place of the usual timeline. Once the converting is completed, the original file will still be there. If you have no use for it anymore, delete it to free some storage on your computer.
Cloud Convert (Web-Based)
If you fear of bloatware or simply do not have a memory for another software, using a web service is a good alternative. The number of choices is large but we recommend Cloud Convert because it has a user-friendly interface and supports all kinds of formats.
However, one of the inherent disadvantages of using this method is that the file must be uploaded to the site’s servers. While Cloud Convert’s policies state that it would not look at them, you still need to remember before you upload anything sensitive to the site. After the converting is finished, the file will be deleted immediately.
Step 1: Upload your file to Cloud Convert. There are two ways to do so. One, click on the button that reads Select Files. The other is to use the drag-and-drop gesture. Cloud Convert can also take files from storage services like Dropbox and Google Drive.
Step 2: You will have a list of formats to choose from, pick MP4. Most people are happy with the default settings, but if you want to change it. Click on the Start Conversion button so that the converting process can begin.
Step 3: Once the conversion is done, you will see the Download button. Select it, and the file will be saved to your computer. Cloud Convert can also be an extension on Chrome or an iOS app.
