We have seen yet another attack aiming at a woman living in California. The hacker penetrated the Amazon Ring camera to leave mean comments about her.
The woman called herself Tammy and she said that one day she heard a voice coming out from the camera in her bedroom. She also noticed that the hacker was able to turn the alarm system of the home off.
The police department of the area has not yet made any comment on this matter. The culprit has not been caught either.
Tammy is afraid that the hackers might have taken photos of her and send them somewhere on the Internet.
Tammy has had the camera for a month and it was for watching her dog. When she contacted Ring about this penetration, what they said was the incident stemmed from a weak password and advised her to change to a stronger one.
The spokesperson of Ring also confirmed that this incident had nothing to do with the company’s system being compromised. According to Ring, what happened was that the user reused the same password for multiple accounts, so it is possible that her other account has been compromised too.
This was not the first time a Ring camera is hacked. Last week, the one in a little girl’s room was compromised and the hacker tried to befriend the girl.
Since Ring cameras have night vision and HD video, the man was not only able to converse with the girl but also see her.
These incidents speak volumes of how important it is to set up two-factor authentication and change passwords regularly.
