Google has announced a pair of new true wireless earbuds, called the Pixel Buds 2, aiming to take on Apple’s AirPods. According to the tech giant, the earbuds will start shipping in Spring 2020 at a price of Rs 12,795, which is in line with the prices of other premium wireless earphones.

The interesting thing about the Pixel Buds 2 is that Google doesn’t use the open hard bud design like the AirPods anymore, it instead moves further towards noise cancellation. In particular, the Pixel Buds 2 make use of silicone ear fins and tips for locking the buds in the ear and leave out environment sound.

The design tends to give users better sound, especially regarding bass, but not all users like to have their ear canals sealed off. Therefore, the company has added a spatial vent that lets in some sound from the environment. We expect the earbuds to work well in workouts though the IP rating hasn’t been revealed yet.

As described by its designer Isabelle Olsen, the Pixel Buds 2 are “floating computers in your ear.” That means you can use Google Assistant just by saying “Hey, Google,” without having to lift your hand. In addition, the earbuds come with sensors for picking up ambient noise as well as adjusting microphone range and speaker volume accordingly.

Also, Google said that this product’s sensors and microphones detect when your jaw is moving to focus the microphones on your voice during phone conversations or when you access the assistant.

In terms of the wireless range, the Buds are said to be able to connect as far as three rooms away in the house and as long as a football field when you’re outdoor.

These earbuds can work for five hours on one charge, equal to the battery life of the AirPods. However, as Bluetooth 5.0 processors are more energy-efficient, some of the current wireless earbuds now offer between six and eight hours of operation. Google says that the Buds’ charging case can offer another 19 hours. And hopefully, the USB-C will offer fast charging too.

Overall, the Pixel Buds 2 seems quite intriguing. But keep in mind that you cannot try them on until early next year, so make sure you’ve noted that in your calendar.
