Apple Considers Adding A Camera To Apple Watch Band

According to a patent spotted by Apple Insider, the iPhone maker may consider adding a camera on the Apple Watch’s band. An optical sensor is believed to be at the end of the strap so that users can turn it in any way they want to take pictures.

You can twist it to capture a scene in front of you or turn it back to take a selfie. On one of the diagrams illustrate how the camera swivels to take pictures on both sides of the band. Another one shows two cameras facing two optical directions. If you want it to take pictures, just pinch the band or use voice control.

Adding a camera to a wearable device is a very difficult thing to do. When it is fixed on your wrist, you will have only a limited number of options for taking photographs, otherwise, you will have to position your arm in some impossible or painful postures. However, the camera on the strap is another story. It is too, with its own problems. If you need an example, just look at what happens to the Samsung Galaxy Gear.

There were rumors saying that Apple intended to give Apple Watch a camera on the strap before, so this patent might be proof of that initial plan.

Many people might get excited knowing about this plan, but a patent does not mean the device will make it to reality. This patent was applied for in September 2016, about the same time Apple Watch Series 2 was released. Until now, there have been two more models being introduced without any sign of the camera.

It is not to say that you may never see that idea in reality, but we never know.
