YouTuber Uses AI To Upgrade A 1896 Movie Scene To 4K

Denis Shriyaev, a software developer and YouTuber, has used AI to turn a famous short French movie shot in 1895 into a 4K movie scene.

While there is nothing special about the content of old videos, they still remind us of how lacking we were in terms of electronic devices. This also means that you can’t expect much about the quality of these videos, in contrast to those beautiful and high-definition scenes captured by modern equipment.

Denis Shriyaev, a software developer and YouTuber, has figured out how to improve this. By using several AI neural networks, this Youtuber has turned a famous short French movie shot in 1895 into a movie scene shot on today’s mobile phones.

Called “L'arrivée d'un train à La Ciotat,” the 50-second documentary film showed a train arriving at the La Ciotat station.

This film became famous after it had allegedly scared viewers inside the theater, thinking that the train would pierce through the screen and hit them. Although this was later clarified as a myth, it still shows how the short film could massively affect people that had never watched movie scenes before.

Feeling like this masterpiece needs an upgrade in terms of quality, Shiryaev has used AI to upscale the movie to 4K resolution at 60 fps. And the result is incredible.

While the original film has no sound, the YouTuber has added sound to the upgraded movie to make it more realistic. However, Shiryaev did not reveal what kind of AI neural networks that he used. But it seems like the video was the result of GANs, the same method used for creating Deepfakes videos.

The 4K version of the video takes away its classic feel. But aside from that, it proves how powerful GANs are in manipulating videos.
