The death toll caused by the coronavirus has reached thousands while the number of confirmed cases doesn’t seem to stop anytime soon. While several industries have been heavily affected and people across the globe are keeping themselves from being subject to the virus, fake news around the deadly disease is being fabricated for bad purposes. Due to the sensitiveness of this topic, YouTube already plans to demonetize all videos in which creators are caught spreading the news about the coronavirus.

The announcement was made available to the public via an official channel called Creator Inside. YouTube’s Director of Product Management Tom Leung appeared in the video and claimed that any video related to coronavirus topic would highly be demonetized, citing how the topic could draw sensitive issues from audiences. This is not the first time YouTube chooses to make such a decision amidst the battles against misinformation and fake news.
To follow the new rule of demonetization, YouTube creators are encouraged to avoid the word “coronavirus” if they want to gain benefit from sharing a video toward this popular platform. What’s more, abbreviations of the disease would still end up with demonetized videos as well.
Tech giants are putting a lot of effort into safeguarding their employees from the coronavirus crisis. Many important events are put on holds such as Facebook’s F8 annual conference or the withdraw of Microsoft from this year’s Game Developers Conference.
