Twitter Updates Policies To Battle Coronavirus Discrimination

The anti-people and racism against those who are diagnosed with coronavirus have been growing rapidly.

A new target has been set by the micro-blogging site Twitter: everyone should behave politely.

Twitter requests everyone to behave politely.

A new update has been proposed by one of the largest social media platforms, which is the prohibition of the dehumanizing language used for people based on their age, gender, disability, and disease. The language that is dehumanizing means the speech that mocks or disregards others with bad manners. As an example, if someone compares you with animals or vermin on Twitter, he will be considered as dehumanized.

According to Twitter, the new change has been imposed quite a long time, but the latter is quite more timely. The anti-people and racism against those who are diagnosed with coronavirus have been growing. Therefore, at least for Twitter, people with dehumanization cannot continue the hate to those people with scary diseases and infection.

Any sayings such as “People with coronavirus are vermin" will be prohibited immediately.

Twitter has debuted its new ideas of anti-dehumanizing speeches in 2018. But until July 2019, Twitter has eventually enacted the specific rules, which specifically block all dehumanizing language towards any members of any religious groups. The enactment came under the background that President Trump called the dehumanizing tropes as "infestation" and ‘’vermin" to the Rep.

For now, any dehumanizing language will be blocked on Twitter. This is based on research that the usage of dehumanizing language on social media is contributing to the violence in real life, and is a part of ongoing effort to make the environment on Twitter become conversationally healthy, with less toxic but more empathetic communication.
