TikTok Blamed For The Death Of A 20-Year-Old Karnataka Student

Another death involving TikTok has happened as a 20-year-old girl from Karnataka fell into a pond while trying to shoot a video.

Just recently, we reported a case involving the death of a 24-year-old guy from Hyderabad who died because of drowning while trying to film a TikTok video. Now, the same fate happened to another young girl from the Kolar district of Karnataka while also using the app.

On June 12, 20-year-old Mala, who was a student at the Kolar Government Women’s College, was trying to recreate a scene from a movie when she fell over into a pond. According to the police, there was no one else there besides Mala at the time of the accident, so no one could come to her rescue.

20-year-old Mala was trying to reenact a movie scene when she fell into a pond.

An official working at the Kolar rural police station said that the incident was discovered after her parents searched for her.

Mala, according to her friend, was a potential would-be actress. Probably influenced by how some Indian TikTok “celebrities” got their fame, she was trying to make people know her name. At her college, Mala was a top student who has recently received a Rs 10,000 scholarship for her efforts in her study.

The case has been filed as “unnatural death”. The police are carrying out a further investigation.

Certainly, this isn’t the first time TikTok is involved in someone’s death and it won’t be the last time. The app itself is not a problem though, it’s the people abusing it.

Safety should be the first priority instead of fame and popularity. Short video apps constantly censor users as well as videos that are considered inappropriate. However, many citizens still concern that the fame that silly stunts bring could affect young users negatively. A report from last year stated that people who were born after 1995 picked “live streaming host” and “online celebrity” as their top career choices.
