This YouTuber Built A Functional Cybertruck From Scratch, Here Is How His Team Did It

The YouTuber reverse-engineered the dimensions showed at the launch event of Cybertruck by Elon Musk himself

It has been three weeks since Tesla released its controversial Cybertruck. As the vehicle will not be delivered until 2021, a YouTuber called “The Hacksmith” decided to make a half-scale replica to pass the time.

After just a week since he announced his plan, the YouTuber has already had a 3D model in mind. Hobson reverse-engineered the dimensions showed at the launch event by Elon Musk himself. However, since the machine needed to bend the exoskeleton of the truck is not available to him, he had to improvise.

His team made use of 300 square feet of stainless steel to make the plan happens. A plasma cutter also comes into play to cut the steel. The bending process is done by a metal brake and the pieces are tacked together with a tig welder. The making of this scale-down truck took an entire day to complete.

Like the real Cybertruck, what Hacksmith made features a tri-motor design. The components are provided by Accelerated System Inc.

The hubs of the front wheels will house two motors. The other one is to power the rear ones. The team later cannibalized two golf carts to provide parts for the leaf spring suspension, drivetrain, and steering track. They mocked these parts to the formed exoskeleton and fastened them.

He posted a video showing his Cybertruck operating with only two wheels on the front and at around one-fourth of its capacity.

There is lots of work to be done, like installing the third motor and fixing the brake system. However, all of these issues will be fixed in the next few weeks, according to the YouTuber.

This scale-down Cybertruck is definitely not legal to run on the streets but the team’s effort is still appreciated.
