This Is What You Should Do If You Can't Upgrade Your Windows 7 To Windows 10

Updating to the latest Windows version is good, but sometimes, your device is old and can only run Windows 7. What should you do then?

Usually, we should update the operating system on our computer to the latest version; however, this may not be a good choice if your device is too old to handle something new. In this case, we will specifically look at laptops running Windows 7, which aren’t compatible with Windows 10.

Make sure your laptop cannot upgrade to Windows 10

One possibility is that the initial upgrade process you took went south for some reason you don’t know. While the manufacturer may be correct, before skipping the update to Windows 10, make sure that your device is ineligible.

“Upgrade compatibility checker” was a tool to help you run within Windows 7 so that you could see if the laptop’s system would have troubles upgrading to Windows 10. It’s known that Microsoft deleted this from the OS a long time ago, but if not, you will find it in an app called “Get Windows 10,” located in the lower-right corner of the Taskbar.

If the tool is not there, download and run the Windows 10 Update Assistant. This tool will run a check and verify your system’s capability to run Windows 10 as well as inform which version you should upgrade your laptop to.

Give it a shot and try upgrading to Windows 10

If you want to try running the latest OS, the Update Assistant will specifically recommend you to download Windows 10 through Media Creation Tool of Microsoft. Even when the Assistant doesn’t suggest this toll or start the upgrade process automatically, you should cancel out and use the tool instead to create a Windows 10 installation image with a separate piece of media. A DVD works fine, but the best to use is a flash drive.

First, ensure that you’re conducting a “clean” installation of the latest version of the OS rather than anything like “in-place upgrade.” That way, you will have the best chance to prevent issues from happening during the process.

Next thing, make sure you have made a complete backup for your system before starting the upgrade. You should create an image which can be used to restore the laptop the same as it was in case the upgrade doesn’t go well. The built-in tools of Windows work too, but if they do not let you make a backup of the system on Windows 7, the free third-party Macrium Reflect app is a good alternative.

It’s also important to ensure that you are using the laptop’s manufacturer’s latest BIOS before beginning the upgrade process. If you’re lucky, you will overcome all the issues you used to have with installing Windows 10.

If you fail, these are alternatives you can consider

Linux Mint: With this option, you will run the operating system from a flash drive or a CD rather than installing it on your system directly. That way, you can go back to Windows 7 if the change is too much to take.

CloudReady: Based on Chromium OS, this also acts as Chome OS’s foundation. If you have used a Chromebook before, this option wouldn’t feel strange at all. And if you haven’t, that’s still not a problem anyway.
