A Reckless Spender
Back in October of last year, a Japanese tycoon with the name of Yusaku Maezawa called out for Elon Musk. Then he slapped down a "big deposit" to be the first passenger on SpaceX's mission to the Moon. He was a big name in the fashion industry in Japan. But now, he is probably asking around if that deposit is refundable or not.
Last Sunday, we saw another announcement from Maezawa saying that he will be auction off some art pieces from his own personal collection. He has also tweeted that “Yes, I have no money” later that day. This piece of news may have a major impact on the mission to the Moon of SpaceX.
SpaceX's Finances
In fact, the Japanese tycoon has been notoriously known as a person who does not think much when he spends. In the past, he has been casually paying millions of dollar on various luxury items such as private jet and paintings. But then in recent years, the network of this tycoon has been decline a lot. His estimated net worth back in $4 billion but then dropped to only around $1.4 billion recently.
On the other hand, back in September of last year, we have the announcement from Musk saying that the rocket for the Moon mission will be scheduled for launch in 2023. That rocket has a stiff price tag of $5 billion, but then that is only estimated. In reality, this whole Moon mission could cost SpaceX up to $10 billion.
Looking at it in another way, if this Moon mission plan relies heavily on the finance of the first Moon passengers (left aside the amount that has been deposited). The financial difficulties of this Japanese billionaire could be a significant hindrance to the Moon mission of SpaceX.
