Security Issues Related To Technology Raised In Rajya Sabha

Lawmakers raise technology-related security issues in the Rajya Sabha. On Wednesday, one of them demanded a law to protect freedom in people’s expression

There have been complaints from several social networking giants, who promote certain views in order to suit their own business interests. On Wed, after being surrounded by those complaints, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, who is one of BJP lawmakers in Rajya Sabha, demanded that a law needs to be practiced to make sure that people’s expression is limited.

According to the legislator, social media networks suppress and amplify specific views by using their own complicated technology and algorithm, curtailing freedom of expression and speech which the Constitution – Article 19 guarantees.

The BJP lawmaker claimed in the Upper House’s Zero Hour: “There is a need for legal framework... Technology is growing very fast.”

Moreover, the MP would like to raise the pink-slip issue which a specific private channel is giving, however, Chairman M. Venkaiah Naidu didn’t allow him. Jairam Ramesh, who is the Congress leader, strongly disagreed with it. He said that because Chandrasekhar has his own TV channel so it appears to be a difference in interests.

The Chairman also required members of BJP to give an explanation about the algorithm bias. With regards to this issue, he presented and talked in detail about how machine learning remained susceptible to human bias, then he sought legislation along the lines of America.

Another member of BJP in the Upper House expressed concern about the issue related to smart devices at home which poses a great threat to people’s privacy. He mentioned the case happening in Surat recently in which the intimate moments of a couple were videoed and posted online by some hackers who used a smart TV.

Furthermore, the privacy of people is currently a big concern which needs appropriate measures from the government to address it.

According to MP Saugata Roy of TMC, Rs 65 crore was the amount of money the transportation ministry could earn by selling and sharing citizen’s data. An order from the Ministry of Human Resource Development has given to make the connection between institutes’ social media accounts and that of every student in higher education. He also expressed his strong disagreement with this as well as demanding to bring a law to protect data.
