Russia's New COVID-19 Shows 100% Effective Against The Coronavirus

According to the latest claim from Rospotrebnadzor, the consumer health watchdog of Russia, EpiVacCorona proved 100% effective in clinical trials.

According to the latest claim from Rospotrebnadzor, the consumer health watchdog of Russia, the new COVID-19 vaccine developed by the country, dubbed EpiVacCorona, is 100% effective in clinical trials. The news was reported by Reuters.

This claim also seems to be aimed at promoting Russia’s COVID-19 vaccination campaign in the country that has witnessed the rollout of Sputnik V, Russia’s first COVID-19 vaccine.

The country began mass trials for the new vaccine in November. EpiVacCorona was developed by Vector Institute and is set to become the second COVID-19 vaccine approved by Moscow.

As reported by Interim, Sputnik V proved 92% effective in protecting people from the coronavirus. Despite such a high efficacy rate, the rollout of this vaccine wasn’t as smooth as expected with 20 volunteers contracting COVID-19 after getting vaccinated.

Now, it remains unclear if the Russian government will focus on rolling out the second vaccine with a higher efficacy rate or it will more quickly roll out both vaccines by increasing supplies.

How do COVID-19 vaccines compare?

Apart from Sputnik V and EpiVacCorona, there are several other COVID-19 vaccines being administered around the world.

Pfizer and BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine is among the most anticipated candidates, developed by scientists from the US and Germany. It was granted authorization for emergency use in December. In Phase III trials, the vaccine showed 95% efficacy. It must be stored at -70 degrees C in specialized units.

There is another COVID-19 vaccine developed by Moderna from the US. It obtained authorization in December as well with a 94.5% efficacy.

Meanwhile, the University of Oxford developed a vaccine in collaboration with AstraZeneca. Their vaccine proved 90% effective against SARS-CoV-2. For full protection, a person must get two doses, the first of which provide 70% efficacy.
