Pune Students Install 24/7 Bookshelf, Start "Open Library Movement"

This initiative is called the “Open Library Movement.” And as a part of this project, the students have set up an open bookshelf by which anyone can access.

Social media is killing people’s reading habits. The time that people spent on scrolling through social media can be spent on reading to have more knowledge, boost creativity and aid imagination. And reading can remind people of how fun it is to get lost between pages.

For those book worms, this news is a good one. Eight students from Pune have started an initiative to inculcate reading habits by offering people 24/7 access to books.

This initiative is called the “Open Library Movement.” And as a part of this project, the students have set up an open bookshelf by which anyone can access. Readers can use this library at Jeet playground in Kothrud 24 hours a day.

If people have books that they have already read or no longer need, they can visit the bookshelf and drop them there. And other people can access them.

In an interview, a member of the movement, Abhishek Awchar, said that their aim in installing this open library was to not only inculcate the residents’ reading habits but also to encourage them to share.

At the moment, there are 200 books at the library. And the group is planning on adding more books.

Abhishek Awchar explained the unique concept, saying that although there were many people wanting to offer financial aid, the group didn’t accept any of those. They would only accept books and bookshelves.

The principle of the library is ‘for the people, by the people, and of the people.” And the area’s residents will be the ones to help maintain that principle.

The group wants to install around 100 more libraries when 2020 ends. If you live in the area and you want to take part in this great initiative, you can call 9422921192 to get more information.
