New Technology With UV Light Can Eradicate COVID-19 6 Times Faster

Amid the COVID-19 outbreak, technology is one of the tools that we use to fight the deadly virus. China, the epicenter of the outbreak is a prime example of this, from deploying drones to spray disinfectant to using AI to identify people not wearing masks.

This time, Yanggao, a public transport firm in Shanghai is using new technology integrated with UV light to eradicate COVID-19 germs on buses. A regular cleaning room has been converted into a disinfection chamber with UV light for buses. The process which normally requires 40 minutes to complete now only needs five minutes.

Uv Light Disinfection
This time, Yanggao, a public transport firm in Shanghai is using new technology integrated with UV light to eradicate COVID-19 germs on buses.

In an interview, the company’s deputy general manager said that after the COVID-19 outbreak broke out, the company had been seeking a new disinfection method that was more efficient.

For the conventional process, two staff would spray disinfectant on the entire bus and then wipe them down. But there’s a problem with this as there were some corners that the human staff could not reach.

The company then worked with a technology supplier and set up a cleaning system integrated with ultraviolet.

For each session, one bus will enter the chamber. Inside the chamber, there are 210 UV tubes. Before activating the system, staff members will leave the room.

Qin added that the company had converted two cleaning rooms and each room could disinfect a maximum of 250 buses a day.

On a regular basis, the company needs to disinfect around 1,000 buses a day. The UV system has significantly reduced the need for manpower.

The WHO has warned that UV lamps shouldn’t be used to sterilize any area of skin as UV radiation can lead to skin irritation. However, according to Qin, no staff is allowed to enter the chambers when they are operating. The staff outside will be in charge of activating the disinfection system.
