Let’s say you are a user of TikTok and you really enjoy a specific account’s post and want to search for more videos of that person, no matter if the videos are from the same account or not.
A new in-video search feature of TikTok allows you to use facial recognition tech to look for that particular person. After you drag a box over that person’s face, TikTok will generate all other posts that it could found with the appearance of the individual. While it may seem to be useful for some, it stands out as a creepy feature which anyone using the app could utilize. The new feature's power proves to be exciting yet terrifying.
Not only helping users search for videos, but the new search feature of TikTok also lets them look up the costumes people are wearing and buy them or any other different kinds of products. It’s actually not that uncommon to see visual search engines with Google letting you search for a chosen picture or Taobao-online marketplace allows its users to search for a particular product through a photo.
Back in February, the short-video sharing platform had to pay a fine of $5.7 million for collecting personal data of preteens. On behalf of the Chinese government, the app is reportedly censoring controversial topics.
It remains unclear if the new search feature will come to the TikTok international versions. And if yes, when?
