According to a Google Trends report, a large number of Indians are trying to make COVID-19 vaccines at home.
India rolled out its massive vaccination program on January 16, aiming at vaccinating at least 300 million people. This is by far the largest vaccination drive in the world.
Since the drive is priority-based, many Indians aren’t on the list to get vaccinated. And as a result, some of them go online to find home-made cures. On January 17 and 18, the search term “How to make a Covid vaccine at home” became Google’s top trending in the country.
However, this isn’t the first time Indians want to take matters into their own hands. Similar searches gained volume in 2020 as COVID-19 continued to spread across India.
Taking advantage of people’s fear, some bad actors have been spreading fake news about the pandemic as well as what might be effective in treating it. Some highlights are concoctions made from ginger, turmeric, and honey. These unverified claims are shared on social media sites and the chatting platform WhatsApp.
The home-made vaccine trend isn’t limited to India though. Many scientists have tested their own vaccines on themselves and some of them even offer homemade creations for sale on Facebook.
India has approved two vaccines for use in the country but people and healthcare experts still question their safety protocols and efficiency. These concerns have fueled a trust crisis in India regarding COIVD-19 vaccines.
