The Indian government is reportedly working on an app similar to WhatsApp to use internally for official communication.
A senior official has talked to the Economic Times about a government’s plan to develop their own platforms for messaging and sending emails to lessen their dependence on third-party apps.
Here is what the official said:
It is believed that this plan is the direct consequence of the trade war between China and the US. As a result, Google, Qualcomm, and some other companies have been asked to stop doing business with Huawei.
The official in question said that the Indian government did not want a case like that of Huawei to happen in India.
The Indian government firmly believes that communication should happen on their own platforms, and the data shared must be stored locally.
In early stages, the plan will be rolled out for government-to-government communication, and later, for government-to-citizen too. There might be a citizen-to-citizen platform in the future, who knows.
